Sometimes you need art to feel what is happening outside your own bubble. It can translate someone else’s story, pain or fear into something that also becomes tangible to you. What does that do to you?
Sometimes you need art to feel something that is not, or not yet, there. It can turn an idea into an experience that allows you to visit a world that does not exist. Could what became tangible be a possible future?
The performance Far from my Bed makes what lies outside your mind suddenly come closer. Afterwards, peace returns to the carillon field, but you know what is taking place far from your bed. Do you see the world differently now?

2. Who are you – Regine Hilhorst
In Latin American history, caudillos have been charismatic, strong leaders who often emerge in times of crisis, offering stability and national pride. More recent caudillos tend to rule with authoritarian methods. They centralize power, weaken institutions, control the judiciary, and suppress opposition.
We now address the presidents of Venezuela, Nicaragua and Mexico. Nicolás Maduro, Daniel Ortega, Andrés Manuel López Obrador:
Who are you that I must bow to you. That I must crawl on my knees, servile begging you not to break me.
Who are you that you strike me down, and when I get up hit me again. Angry you belittle me, you hate me, but you don’t know me.
Who are you. Am I your fury? Am I the wrong and you the right? Must I break down and bleed for you? My blood has the same colour, the same smell.
Who are you?
Can’t you see I’m alike you. That I am your mother and your daughter. That I am your soul and your conscience. Don’t you see that I am you?
Who are you that I must bow to you. That I must crawl on my knees. Servile begging you not to break me.

3. What if … a love duet – arr. Esther Schopman
Featuring the Taiwanese love song Bāng Chhun-hong (Longing for the spring breeze; Teng Yu-hsien) & the Chinese lovesong Yuèliang Dàibiǎo Wǒ de Xīn (The moon represents my heart; Weng Ching-hsi)
Make love, not war; a beautiful dream. Would it be possible: a world with only peace and love? For example, what would happen if China loved Taiwan unconditionally? That is, without considering what Taiwan has to offer China, without wanting anything in return, without wanting to own Taiwan. In other words: What if China took Taiwan’s interests as seriously as its own?
The Taiwanese folk song Bāng Chhun-hong and the Chinese folk song Yuèliang Dàibiǎo Wǒ de Xīn were adapted into a love duet.
4. The beast – Regine Hilhorst
The beast, the beast has broken loose. Was it first chained to its bones, did it watch throbbing in my temples, hungered it howling beneath my skin. I let it sour in my stomach, then it devoured itself. The beast, the brutal beast.
Until, at a dinner party, it spat malnourished on the table. It vomited out through my mouth, broke creaking through my cranium, roared rasping from my name. The beast, the brutal beast.
Where I expected shameful horror, burst out howling cheers. Howling cheers. From open pressed heads, from neatly ironed collars, cheered the beast, the brutal beast.
Now I feed it. I feed it with my blood. I let it snarl in the streets with clawed comrades. Then it headbutts me. The beast. The beast is loose.
5. Before the tide surges – Lena C.
A conflict can be ambiguous. It can hide under your daily life for several decades, giving you the impression that it is so far away. But what if it ever manifested?
In this section, we bring you to life in Taiwan, merging sound samples, electronic synthesis, and carillon sounds through ambient sounds of the bustling urban atmosphere and the warmth of its people. Moreover, a short melody from the Taiwanese folksong Bāng Chhun-hong weaves through the piece, symbolizing Taiwan’s love, hope, and the spirit of freedom. However, if the conflict ever intensifies – evoking a sudden, poignant stillness – what will then become of the beautiful life and sounds to which we are used to?
About the creators
Lena C. is a Taiwanese sound artist based in Enschede, Netherlands. She explores sound and interdisciplinary art through artistic research as well as live performance and free improvisation in electronic music, composition for visual art and installations. Her research interests revolve around themes of relationality between individuals and natural phenomena, posthumanism, and the influence of technology and media on human experience. In terms of tools, she uses modular synthesizers, field recording samples and Max/MSP to create ambient and experimental sound with unique textures, ranging from gentle immersion to intensive dynamic.

Pedro Coloma is a Chilean composer mainly focused on film music, currently getting a degree in Composition for Film and Theater in ArtEZ University of the Arts (Arnhem, NL). His autonomous works include pieces for orchestra, carillon, piano, string quartet, chamber ensembles and electronics. Aside from his autonomous works he has written music for films and animations.

Regine Hilhorst is a theatre maker, actor, teacher, writer and poet. She is artistic director of Theatre Group De Nieuwe Koning and creates customised theatre and free performances. With Moes Wagenaar, she forms the duo Anja and Tanja, of the institute to promote poetry in general and junior poetry in particular. Together with pianist and accordionist Bert van der Veen, she creates customised song poetry programmes and holds theatrical tours of Ruurlo Castle. Regine was city poet of Enschede from 2013 to 2015.www.reginehilhorst.com.

Esther Schopman is city carillonist of Enschede and campus carillonist of the University of Twente. She is also coordinator, researcher and coach at the Sound City platform of the Master of Music (ArtEZ University of the Arts), where artistic research is carried out linked to social themes and in collaboration with civil society organisations.
